For the KHS-400B/KHS-400C, remove the anti-static bridge using a 15-25W soldering iron and desoldering braid. With the bridge removed, you should see 2 circuits passing freely through the area. One is for CD, the other for DVD.

For the KHS-400R/SF-HD7, remove the anti-static bridges using a 15-25W soldering iron and desoldering braid. Some models may only have 1 solder point but it will be in the same area as shown. With the bridge removed, you should see 2 circuits passing freely through the area. One is for CD, the other for DVD.

For consoles up to V8, remove the screw with a Philips screwdriver. This will free the laser.

For V9 and V10 (SCPH-5000x), there is a sheet metal brace at the rear of the drive that locks down the 2 guide rails. Notice that there is a round black stub that is in the round circle at the middle of the brace. A step below will reference this when we are reinserting the brace. On the left and the right rear sides of the brace there are prongs. Take a screw drive, like in the picture, and insert it about 3/4 of the way down. Apply pressure so that the tip of the screwdrive applies pressure towards the front of the drive and the prong will come out from under the frame at the rear of the drive. Do the right side the same as the left. The sheet metal brace will lift right out. This will free the laser.

Remove the guide rail and the laser guide arm (1 small Philips screw as shown). The laser cable is held to the laser by a slide lock which will need to be slid out to free the laser cable. Use a slightly firm rocking motion to get it to slide out. Do not be very forceful, the arms on the sides are VERY SLIM plastic and can be damaged.  The slide arm will only come out about 1/16th of an inch.

Clean the teeth on the guide arm if necessary and attach it to your new laser, reconnect the laser cable, slide in the guide rail and set the laser in place. Make sure that the cog wheel is set to the factory settings. For the V9/V10 KHS-400R and SF-HD7, the factory setting will be 12 o'clock, the KHS-400C is 10 o'clock. For the V5-V8 KHS-400R, the setting is 9 o'clock, the KHS-400C is either 9 or 10 o'clock. V1-V3 will always reset automatically to the factory setting. The picture  shows a V9/V10 KHS-400R/SF-HD7 setting.

To reinstall the sheet metal brace for the V9 and V10 (SCPH-5000x), we suggest setting the brace upright so the bottom of the brace fits into the slot on the frame as shown. Simply move the brace down and to the rear of the drive and it will lock in place with the prongs snapping back under the rear frame and the black stub will fit perfectly in the round opening in the brace. If you don't get it right the first time, simply start over.
