You will need to remove your drive from your console to replace the laser. We strongly suggest that you work in an area that is very well lit and is free from any chance of static. Our friends at llama.com have a pictorial for disassembly. Once you get the top 2 covers off, the drive is easily removed from the console. First we need to remove the top cover. Flip your drive so the bottom is facing you and remove the 5 screws and 3 flanges. Note that there are 2 small silver screws on the top with a flange on the top right. Note that there are 3 black screws on the bottom with flanges on the left and right. Do not swap the locations of the silver and black screws when you put your drive back together. Flip the drive over and gently lift the cover at the rear of the drive about 1 1/2 inches and slide it toward the front of the drive until the prongs clear underneath then lift up. Be very careful not to scratch the circuit board on the bottom.
| Once again flip the drive so the bottom is facing you. Remove the 2 screws on the top left and top right of the circuit board and very gently lift up the snap locks to free the 3 ribbon cables that are attached. If your cable on the left (worm-gear cable) has tape on it like the picture, gently peel it off. VERY GENTLY lift the circuit up and flip it over to the right. The bottom cover can now be removed by lifting slightly and moving it toward the rear of the drive.
| Free up the worm-gear ribbon cable from its setting as shown.
| VERY GENTLY reseat the circuit board and for good measure screw in the 2 black screws.
| Flip your drive over so the top is facing you and remove the 5 screws.
| VERY GENTLY lift the top up and flip it over to the left. VERY GENTLY peel off the black tape from the back of the laser. There is a very thin snap lock holding the laser ribbon cable in place, VERY GENTLY lift it up to free the cable. Next remove the 4 screws at the edges of the hop.
| Lift up on the front of the hop and gently lift up the snap lock to release the ribbon cable that is connected to the drive circuit board. When you are replacing the tape at the back of the laser, make sure that it covers the snap lock. This ensures that the cable will not come loose during play. Follow the above procedure in reverse and your new laser is installed.
